WASH provides equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for communities who are deprived from it. The WASH programmes provide access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all, ends open defecation, pays special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations by building infrastructure (water wells, safe compost toilets, ecological water treatment, storage & distribution), improving sanitation and developing hygiene awareness.
HOW IS THIS SUSTAINABLE?
Water wells are not an infinite resource! To enhance sustainability, these wells need to recharged. Sustainable solutions store water, treat grey water, e.g. using Reid-beds, reduce waste, and compost lower grade water are necessary.
Hygienic solutions that include developing and implementing safe compost toilets can both increase the safety of communities living in less hygienic environment. Infrastructure cost make conventional toilets unaffordable in developing countries and in rural areas of developed countries, as a result, ~35% of the world’s population to lack access to basic, working toilets.
Cost-effective, Eco-friendly, sustainable toilet solutions are needed to help increase the access to safe, hygienic and Eco-friendly toilets.
